1940s Rhinestone Necklace w/ Sapphire Blue Centre - Vintage Necklaces - Art Deco
This necklace was made at the end of the Art Deco period in the 1940's. It consists of three panels, two of which are in a kind of knotted pattern, with clear crystal rhinestones set into a silver tone base, and a central panel in the shape of a cut out heart with a central raised sapphire blue crystal rhinestone.
The three panels are linked together and attached to a silver tone chain which is fastened with a circular ring pull clasp.
I noticed, that the clasp is set on the opposite side to normal, so that you need to open the link with your left hand (or get someone else to fasten it for you). Since it's original I think it may have been made for a left handed woman originally. It's not a huge problem. I'm not left handed and I tried the necklace on easily enough, but I thought I'd better mention it. Great if you happen to be left handed though!
This unusual necklace is in very good to excellent condition, with all of the original stones clear and intact. There is slight discolouring to the links between the three panels, and to the clasp, due to it's age. It would be perfect for a bride or bridesmaid, or for the woman who has a special occasion coming up and wants to wear something very different.
Length: approx. 19 inches with a further 1 1/4 inches for the heart drop. The base of the heart sits just below the breastbone but above the bust, when worn.

Fashion for Flappers
The roaring twenties will forever be remembered as the decade of flappers. “Bright Young Things” dressed up for a night on the town at a dance hall or illegal speakeasy. Free of the moral and physical constraint of the previous decades the clothing was loose but glamorous. The flapper girls wore long necklaces, sometimes made of pearls, sometimes like this one, made of beads.
A sautoir flapper necklace with long tassels such as this, might have been worn long, tied like a tie at the start of the tassels, or wrapped around the neck once like a choker, or twice, with the tassels hanging down the front at the sides like a scarf, or even worn with the tassels hanging down the back - very sexy.
There are very many ways in which such a necklace would have, and can be worn. For sure the tassels, when hung to the front, would have been swung around whilst the girl was dancing. A very lively dance, and a very lively necklace.
